Here’s how living with intention can help you become the person you want to be….
I had an enormous wake-up call from one of my clients yesterday that kicked me right up the butt.
She’d emailed me to book another coaching session along with an apology about why she’d not been in touch for a while. She’d just started her PhD and life had taken over.
She also reported; “I kept on coming back to something you said at the end of the last session – about being intentional. That’s been very important, and I keep that at the forefront of my mind. Incorporating this into my thinking has, I think, changed how I’m approaching things, with positive effects.”
Wow, she’d started living with intention, and it was working for her! YIPPEE!!! I was totally thrilled for her, and I sooooo needed to hear that right now.
You see, I was sat on my couch procrastinating. I was going to a yoga retreat the next morning, and I wasn’t 100% mentally prepared for it. Time was ticking away. It was 8pm, and I hadn’t started packing my bag.
I’ll explain…I had a relationship break up about 6 months ago, and I’ve moved past the flight or fight stage into the “uuurgggh I feel sad” stage. I’m not waking up and putting one foot in front of the other and getting through the day anymore. I’m just about back in the real world. I’m massively trying not to be scared of my emotions, instead just observing and being curious.
So when I feel sad, I actually feel it. Something I’m not used to. Just feeling these feelings. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling like this, and I’ve been ignoring that I’m going away soon on this trip because I feel sad. I’m not super excited like I usually would be.
Anyway I’m sat on my couch, and this email arrives, and when I hear “living with intention”, it dawns on me, for the past few weeks, while I’ve been feeling sad, I’ve not been living with intention.
I’ve not been intentional about living into my vision of life. Hence I sat procrastinating and not packing my bag for my trip.
Part of my vision for life is to be stress-free.
I procrastinate and then rush to get stuff done at the last minute. This causes me enormous amounts of stress. Then things don’t always work out the way I’d like them to so I often verbally beat myself up for leaving it until the last minute. I find myself in a lose-lose situation.
This habit of leaving things until the last minute is a habit I have in most areas of my life. It’s also been a habit of a lifetime! Seriously, I’ve missed trains and planes with this bad habit.
So what is living with intention?
Living with intention is a fantastic tool to propel you towards more of what you want.
It’s a different way of being. It’s about being the way you want to be. Stepping into that person that you want to be and living as that person intentionally. It’s about waking up each day as the new you. It’s about genuinely feeling like you are the new you.
Once you do this, you automatically start making different decisions and behaving differently and in line with the new you. This helps you to get more of what you want and enables you to become the person you want to be.
So I get this email, and I’m on the sofa procrastinating, and I’m like “wtf” sort this out girl. This is not who you want to be.
I want to be a person that gets things done in good time and have a stress-free life.
So I asked myself; “If I was living with intention right now, as the person I want to be, what would happen?”
I would get my bag packed and go to bed early. I’d set my alarm to wake up early in the morning and get the taxi in good time to get to the airport with plenty of time to spare.
So that’s just what I did!
Once I got to the airport, I got to the gate early and was nearly first on the plane.
Check this out…success!
I had no stress, and I was singing my own praises for the rest of the day instead of giving myself a verbal kicking.
This is just one of the techniques I use with clients to help them become the person they want to be and live the happy life they want to live.
